It’s all about whom you know

Yeah I’ve had to deal with 401k rollovers before. Back at the turn of the millennium I had to figure it out when my former employees folded and we all had to take our money out. I talked to a few financial advisors at the time and found the best solution, for me at least, was to create my own IRA at my favorite banking establishment and just rolled them all in. This way I didn’t have to pay taxes on the funds and can still contribute on my own pre tax. Now it’s just something I do. If my company offers me a 401k, I take them up on it, maxing it out as best I can all the while keeping my IRA robust as I contribute the max to it annually as well.

Some companies let you leave your cash in their 401k, but this is just good for the financial institution the company is working with. It doesn’t really help you per say and sooner or later someone may tell you to get your money out ASAP. IRAs cost nothing and made me feel more like I was taking responsibility myself instead of relying on a company that I could not rely on.

So I’m feeling a bit better today. Currently sitting at the Boston ICA overlooking the water and letting the calm waters bring me some peace. I’ve been putting off my personal projects and am now giving them another look with fresh eyes. I have a paper on “the use of comics in development specs” that needs to be concluded before I forget what my points were.

Also I got some work news. No I didn’t get a new job like you, you lucky $#%*. Instead I got a fellowship with ScienceCommons (a division of CreativeCommons). I know the CEO through my mother, used to watch his cat for him while he was off traveling the world driving up business for SC. So now I have called in my favor and asked if they would be interested in my interaction skills, no pay of course. Turns out they are, so now I am up to my eye balls in scientific data trying to understand the NeroCommons process and coming up with my project plan. I have to say I’m as excited as I can get about this. Its still so new, I just chatted with them yesterday, but WOW. I have the chance to be part of something huge here. Sounds better then being a waitress at a diner regardless of the free food.

Still haven’t found a renter for my condo. Still haven’t gotten ride of my car. Still haven’t figured out my health insurance situation. Still haven’t heard much more on a paying job. Still haven’t figured out what to do when I run out of money. Should drop off my taxes paperwork to my accountant at least, perhaps there is a giant tax refund that will help me through these dark times.
